Gratitude check: overdue catch-up chats with people who matter; a day to embrace my inner sloth; black-eyed susans making a surprise appearance after two years off.
I am a truly dull shoe person. Although I have lots to choose from, I tend to wear only one (maybe two) pair(s) on a regular basis.
They're comfy. Practical. Broken in.
However....I noticed the other day that the stitching is starting to come apart on one side.
Come to think of it, my feet have been kinda sore at the end of the day. My bum hip, too. Maybe my old faithfuls aren't providing the support I need.
I flipped them over, and noticed that the tread is almost worn away - hmmmm. If I ever need traction, they aren't going to cut it.
Momma needs a new pair of shoes. Sigh.
I love new shoes, cause they're, well, new shoes!! Who doesn't enjoy a new pair of shoes?
But (and there is always a "but", isn't there?)...the new ones are a little pinchy in places. Although they're comfortable (because at a certain age a woman realizes that her shoes need to be if they're going to go the distance) they feel a little odd. Not bad, but not the same as the old-tried-and-true pair. Which, if I'm going to be honest, aren't working for me any more.
So I wear the new shoes. I need to, because in order to put my best foot forward I need to have that foot clad in something that is supportive, and will serve my soles when I need to go over some rougher ground. Something that is together, not falling apart.
In time, the pinchy places disappear - I've worn them enough that they've molded to my feet a bit. They don't feel odd anymore - I've gotten used to the feeling of new tread under my step. My aches have eased - these new shoes are now my new faves!!
Sometimes the need to make a change is so gradual that we honestly don't even realize that the "old ways" aren't working until we sit down with them and take a good look. Realize that the "norm" isn't doing it for us any more. Come to understand that we need to go and find a new something that suits us a little better.
So take the time to look around until you find something comfortable. Something that suits you. Serves your soul. Supports your weight. Eases your aches. Gives you traction, when you need it.
The perfect fit is out there and, given some time to get used to the "new", it will feel every bit as good as the "old" ever did. Even better - because it fits you. The way you are, right now.
